Pooch-A-Rilla: Six months since

It is six months, today, without Miss Pooch-A-Rilla.

I suppose I am a "cat person" now.

Throughout my entire life, my family and I had the companionship of dogs.  It is a break to not have to wake and walk an animal as well as do this when it is cold and you are tired, just before sleep.

I am content with Li-Kitty. She did show signs of sadness for a while, including sleeping where Pooch would.  My cat allergies have diminished greatly.  When I leave for a day or even two, I no longer have to call upon a friend to keep watch.

Most days I am fine, however there are often moments when I sit and reflect upon the amazingly beautiful buddy I had, who touched the lives of so many people in person and over the net, who was there with me for roughly fourteen years, a few states (physically & mentally), who was a hiking partner, snuggle pillow, snorer (sometimes even louder than me), dancing partner (she was a graceful waltzer) and last but not least, a member of my family.

I miss her dearly but it was time.  I am extremely lucky to have had the moments I did.  Miss Pooch-A-Rilla is a major highlight of my life.

I love you, Pooch!

The art of sailing

We've watched this rather marvellous nautical installation by Josh Beckman taking shape over the last few weeks, and LA's Machine Project gallery sent us some images of the final piece in place, just in time for the new issue...

Beckman's shipwreck installation, Sea Nymph, forms a centrepiece for Machine Project's current season of talks, events, workshops and performances, which include, as they say on their website, an opera by and for dogs. Aha, 'sea dogs' no doubt.

A full schedule of events is available here, while a live stream from the boat's own 'mast cam' is here. The installation will be in the gallery until 8 October.

All images by Marianne Williams. More at machineproject.com.

Play It Again Sam has brought lots of amazing artists to the ears of millions of fulfilled listeners!!! Whether the last decade of fans of Metric or past years ears sounds of The Young Gods, Meat Beat Manifesto, Legendary Pink Dots and even recent bands that harness the classic flavors such as Editors and The Mirrors.

Agnes Obel's music has a fresh take of peaceful melodies and gentle piano with her voice. This reminds me of Cat Power but also of other artists I enjoy and I hope you will too!

Rationality Goes out the Window When it Comes to Food

No Gravatar

Some topics are challenging to approach from a rational perspective. Especially experiential topics: food, love, and music, for example. Although rationality has a place in all three, only a vulcan would put the science before the sensual.

Since the 1980s, dietary guidelines have shown that eating fruits, vegetables, & whole grains and avoiding refined sugars & saturated fats can help us steer clear of chronic disease. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans are updated & published every five years. Almost everything has a nutrition label on it. We have more information about what we should eat and what we are eating than we’ve ever had before. And yet, all of this information has failed to have a positive impact on our eating habits. According to the CDC, only 26.3% of people eat vegetables three times per day and 32.5% eat fruit twice a day, a slight decrease from a decade ago. Rationality just isn’t a priority when it comes to food.

If we want to be healthy, and have the knowledge, tools, & skills to get there, why aren’t we?

It’s easy to dismiss this behavior as irrational or as a lack of willpower over tasty food & cultural challenges such as:

  • Dual income families & long hours on the job leave less time for planning meals and cooking fresh food
  • The increasing availability of low quality, easily prepared food impacts our choices at the grocery
  • Th eating habits of the family unit when only one member wants to diet, especially if that person is the family cook.
  • The abundance of conflicting diet & nutrition information can be confusing & overwhelming

These are all valid issues, but they may not tell the whole story.

Stacey Finkelstein from the University of Chicago did a study on the psychological components of food choice that uncovered some thought provoking results. In one case, she distributed identical protein bars, but told some subjects the bars were “healthy” and others that they were “tasty”. The subjects with the “healthy” bars reported less satisfaction.

In another case, she let half the subjects choose whether or not to eat the bar, and told the other half it was their job. The ones who weren’t given a choice reported less satisfaction.

So, if this study is correct, even controlling for taste, we don’t respond favorably to being told what to eat, and we don’t like eating anything we perceive as healthy – even if it tastes good! That doesn’t bode well for the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

It may seem irrational that one would want to be healthy, have the knowledge, tools, & skills to get there, and still choose not to, but ultimately choices are logical. There’s a payoff – time savings, laziness, pleasure, perception – that is just more important that achieving health. And ultimately, what’s most important to you is your choice to make.

Chick-fil-A Partners With Rabid Anti-Gay Group

Please sign the petition on this.... :(

Sadly, out of any fast food places.. I actually like their food. I did eat Del Taco infrequently.... and about ten plus years ago, would sometimes hit the local Wendy's in Philadelphia.... I rarely eat fast food. At this very moment, they are constructing a Chik-Fil-A, literally, less than 200 steps from me... :(

Amplify’d from gayrights.change.org

Chick-fil-A Partners With Rabid Anti-Gay Group

You might like the tasty pickles that they put on their chicken sandwiches, but if you're eating at Chick-fil-A, you're also eating at an establishment that partners with some of the most ferocious anti-gay groups around.

Take a look at an event scheduled for February 2011, co-sponsored by Chick-fil-A and the Pennsylvania Family Institute, the leading anti-gay group in the Keystone State and a group that has worked hard to try and pass a constitutional amendment in Pennsylvania banning same-sex marriage.

The February event co-sponsored by Chick-fil-A is called "The Art of Marriage," and it's intended to be a launching point for Pennsylvania to return to "the biblical definition of marriage." Given the work of the Pennsylvania Family Institute, it's hard not to see where this event is going to go -- straight for the jugular of anyone who supports marriage equality for same-sex couples.

The Pennsylvania Family Institute has been a leading opponent of marriage equality, and has condemned the expansion of civil rights for same-sex couples. Speaking to the Philadelphia Inquirer, the group's president, Michael Geer, said that gay marriage is not moral, and should be put up for a vote rather than decided by courts or legislatures.

"The only way that we can get the people to decide this issue is through the ballot box," Geer said. "Marriage as defined as between a man and a woman has proven to be the best for the health, education and welfare of children."

And that's a mild statement coming from Geer. As more and more states have moved to legalize same-sex marriage, Geer has stated that unless Pennsylvania adopts a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, it could be forced to accept same-sex couples as equals.

"Newspapers across the commonwealth editorialized -- and many legislators said -- we don't need an amendment, we already have a law [banning gay marriage]. This [ruling] makes clear that the law is insufficient," Geer said, after California's Supreme Court ruled in favor of marriage equality in 2008. (That ruling was eventually overturned by the passage of Proposition 8.)

The Pennsylvania Family Institute has blasted gay marriage in a number of other ways, too. They've argued that calling committed same-sex couples married is like calling the tail of a dog a leg. They've said that when Judge Vaughn Walker ruled Proposition 8 unconstitutional, that human civilization took a direct hit. They've suggested that discriminating against same-sex couples is perfectly acceptable, because same-sex couples weren't biologically meant to be together. And they've said that same-sex marriage threatens children, hurts families, and punishes all of society by caving in to components of a radical sexual revolution.

And if you're spending money on Chick-fil-A sandwiches, you're helping the Pennsylvania Family Institute deliver this message.

It's not the first time Chick-fil-A has been connected to some anti-gay actors. In February 2009, an Auburn student documented that Chick-fil-A had given money to Focus on the Family, the anti-gay Colorado group founded by the Rev. James Dobson. Focus on the Family, for their part, has a lengthy record of anti-gay extremism, from calling same-sex couples a danger to the planet, to suggesting that legalizing same-sex marriage would be a worse disaster than Pearl Harbor.

Fool me once, Chick-fil-A, shame on you. But fool me twice? Shame on me. That's why it's time to get Chick-fil-A to respond, and figure out whether they're interested in being a fast food restaurant, or they're interesting in being a business that partners and caters to some radical anti-gay elements in our country. Send the restaurant chain a message asking them why they're sponsoring an event in Pennsylvania with a leading anti-gay organization. And let the restaurant know that if they value all of their customers, including their LGBT customers and straight allies, they'll pull their official sponsorship from this event and stop making chicken sandwiches that support extremely homophobic agendas.
